Junathan T. Cruz
Junathan or Sultan as he is fondly called is a male woodcarver and painter from the Talaandig Tribe of Tulugan, Sungco, Lantapan, Bukidnon. He speaks Binukid or Inukit (the Talaandig dialect), Pilipino and English. He began doing art when at the early age of 15; he was inspired by Waway Saway - who told him that art is a way of survival. He prefers to carve, however, when he gets bored of carving he paints using soil as medium. Sometimes he uses the juice extracted from leaves. The natural color of the leaves is used to tint some portion of the paintings. His entire medium is natural. He wants to become a simple example to the youth and convey to them through his works that one can give life to simple things when they are valued. When I use natural medium, I feel that I protect nature from destruction as I am making good use of it. He wants to show everybody that from simple things, art develops. In his own words - he wants to give simple example to the next generations.
